The Office-Chair, part VI

It was too good to be true… I know, it was a fake designer chair, but I could never be able to afford the genuine thing. I know you are not supposed to buy the copies… but if they don’t want us to, set the price for the originals to a more affordable level.

office-chair, charles eames dar, infurn

As it seems, I will not get the office-chair I ordered and paid for in March. Company has disappeared from the face of earth… and gone bankrupt. Got this email on May 27th:

—quote—

Dear Customer

We apologise for any inconvenience caused to you in the past, especially since the beginning of May 2014 regarding your outstanding order.

Unfortunately infurn.com has suffered financial difficulties due to the loss of several business partners from February 2014 onwards.

Please be advised that the group of companies behind the web shop infurn.com have instructed UHY Hacker Young LLP (Turnaround and Recovery Specialists) to review the financial position of the group of companies.

Due to UHY Hacker Young LLP’s review of the financial situation of the group and after discussions with them, it is apparent that the group of companies are insolvent and shall all be entering an insolvency process.

Due to the impending Liquidation of Infurn Limited, the service company of the group which ran the business of customer support, you were not informed of this situation. Infurn Limited ceased trading on 2 May 2014 as they were dependent on funding from the trading company of the group, Livingdesign SL.

We are in the process of instructing lawyers/insolvency experts in Spain with the assistance of UHY Hacker Young LLP to assist with the restructuring of Livingdesign SL.

However, in the meantime, it has been decided that a new operator, DSGN Sales and Support Facilities Limited will take over the web shop (Infurn.com) from 2 May 2014. The purpose of this company is to try to honour all existing customer orders, however at this stage we are unable to confirm our ability to do so.

This company shall not be taking over any of the liabilities of the Infurn.com group and cannot provide any guarantee on delivery times of orders.

We understand our customers? position but we kindly ask you to provide us with time in order to ascertain the level of outstanding orders and whether they can be fulfilled.

You shall be contacted soon with a further update.

Kind regards,

INFURN Group

— end of quote —

Since then, nothing. Website has closed and is no more (it was still up and selling at the time I got this email). No links in the email work. There is now nobody to contact. Googling for the company I came to this page https://kundo.se/org/konsument-europa/d/ar-infurn-ett-blufforetag/ (page is in swedish). So, this is a dead end and there will be no chair.

Chair was supposed to be delivered in mid July.  I threw out the old one in mid May and got a temporary chair. That was OK for the short period from then to mid July when I was supposed to get the new office-chair. It costed just SEK 149… It is not comfortable …it doesn’t hurt my elbows though the way the old chair did as it it doesn’t have any armrests.

Temporary office-chair

Now I am left with the choice between these two Ikea office-chairs as I still need an office-chair…. Grey or wild pattern? Probably grey.

It is NOT FUN to lose the money for the ordered chair though. Am trying to get it back via my bank. Sent in the complaint papers just yesterday.

To be continued.

Added 2014-06-19: Today I got the following email which confirms that there will be no delivery of the order. Still nobody to communicate with…

Dear INFURN customer,

further to our last email to all INFURN customers, we regret to inform you that the website has now stopped trading. After numerous attempts to secure the required funds to keep the site running, it has been impossible for the new operator DSGN to continue the business. It has therefore been decided, with the advice of the appointed adviser to the Group, UHY Hacker Young LLP, that all operations are to be suspended.

If you had an order with any of our companies, and it has not been delivered yet, partially or at all, you will be contacted by new insolvency administrators, which are to be announced soon, responsible for winding up of respective company with which you placed your order.

As all companies have stopped trading with immediate effect, we are unable to provide you with any service support.

We apologise for the disruption this may cause to you, and we are really sorry that we are unable to fulfil your order, as we would have liked.

Regretful,

Infurn.com

Ridiculous pricing

iphone cover

IF I had an iPhone 5S (which I don’t at the moment, but will when I get around to exchange my 4S for a 5S), I might be tempted to buy this cover. I like the wide black and white stripes. But the price, SEK 309 at Apple Store in Sweden (approximately USD 47), makes me NOT wanting to buy it.

Again, overpriced design items… But I will need a cover of some sort.

Big Type

Catching Fire

Some time ago I bought the three books The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins from Amazon.com.

When I had finished reading The Hunger Games and opened Catching Fire I got very surprised. The type was BIG. Looking at the cover it actually says Large Print Edition… That was not what I ordered, and part one, The Hunger Games, had normal sized print. Checked the third book, Mockingjay, and found that it had large print as well. So, out of three books, one had normal print, the others large print.

I’ve never before read a book with large print and it feels a bit odd. Easy to read, yes, but it disturbs my typographical sense as the text is ugly when that big. Of course books can be read anyways. It is the content that counts.

Are they any good? Yes. They are. Even grownups can read them, though targeted at youths.

Decorative Bird

Eames Housebird. Picture from Rum24

Eames House Bird. Picture from Rum24

There is this decorative bird by the Eames brothers, made in wood with metal legs. I love it. It is really nice. If somebody would give it to me I would be happy. I would not buy it myself though as it costs SEK 1590… Designer items… sigh…

Yesterday the daily visit from the common woods dove made me think of that one.  The dove wandered on top of the fence, looking very decorative…

This is how it sounds:

Columba_palumbus_birdsong

There are two doves who regularly come to visit the lawn outside my outside place. Sometimes just one, sometimes both at the same time. They are nice birds these woods doves, not like the common doves you see in cities. They like to sit in trees and call their special sound. This is how it looks when not photographed against the sun. It is blue-grey with a pink-red breast. Typical of it is the white “collar”.  If you want to know more about it wikipedia is your friend.

Simple shelves

Presently there are several simple-looking shelves out there which are SO similar in form and look. The price varies a lot though.

1. VIPP

The large one costs SEK 2.299 and is of aluminum. Comes in black or white. Is 100 cm long.

2. IKEA BOTKYRKA

Comes in dark grey, white or yellow. Material: lacquered steel. Price SEK 199. Is 80 cm long.

3. TEKKA at INFURN*)

tekka

Picture from infurn.com site.

Comes in black, white or walnut. Material: MDF. Price SEK  3.829. Is 200 cm long.

I am certain that there are more similar shelves out there. I like them all when it comes to looks. When it comes to price, I would definitely favor the Ikea model. I think it is ridiculous to pay more for such a simple shelf. The Ikea-one is really nice.

*Note that Infurn.com has gone belly-up and is no more.

Trendy Things That are Everywhere

I recently wrote about trendy things I dislike. There are also more of those trendy things that every interior design blog and magazine about interior design show and write about. Some of them I am a bit ambivalent about. Like these ones below.

vas_dagg, vase_dagg

This is the vase “Dagg”. You can get it at Svenskt Tenn for SEK 2.800… First of all I would never pay that much for a vase. Secondly, I don’t even think it is beautiful… It is just trendy, just now.

beniouraincarpet_

Then there is the above carpet. The Beni Ourain carpet.  Long-haired wool carpets. Particularly this pattern and style is seen everywhere. I do not really like it. Longhaired. Looks like those untidy off-white shepherd carpets you saw a lot of in the 70-ties. Some of these carpets are very folkloristic in style. I should like them, right? I don’t though. Particularly not when you see them just everywhere.

brass

There is also the brass trend. I like brass candle holders. I don’t like large flower pots in brass. And then there are all the other brass things that keep popping up. In the end it jsut becomes too much. Granted, I myself have a group of brass candle holders, which I love. I would like to add more brass candle holders to that. I have a brass lamp in the living room window, and I have three small brass buckets hanging in one of the kitchen windows, but I wouldn’t want to add more other brass things.

Finally there is Kubus by Lassen.

bylassen kubus_bylassen

I am really ambivalent here. I both like and don’t like. I like the clean lines. I like the white models. I don’t like the brass models… I like the variations. I like the bowls more than I like the candle holders. I even entered a competition to win one of these… Hmm.

The problem is when certain items are seen just everywhere. Particularly when it is design items that are really expensive to acquire. I have no problem seeing Ikea things just everywhere, that is expected. But these… and the ones I dislike which I mentioned in another post.

All images are borrowed from the internet, something I normally don’t do. I try having my own images. In this case I don’t own the items so have no choice.

Trendy things I dislike

In fashion and in interior design everything is coming back it seems. From the past I mean… Some of the things that are trendy I find to be terribly ugly. At least in my eyes. Other apparently like them. Some examples of these below.
Images are borrowed from around the internet.

50ties femtiotal

Things or looks from the 50-ties… Shiny mahogany furniture with thin legs… Brownish. Or beige.  Those of us who grew up with this kind of furniture usually do not want to see it again. Who wants to have a home that looks like the one you grew up in? I definitely don’t for the most of it. I admit there are certain items that I like, but most of them… no thanks.

linne_lakan2

Crinkled linen sheets. They are everywhere in each and every interior design article in magazines and on the blogs too.  The above ones look almost OK, but the problem with them is: they are crinkled, and they get more and more crinkled over time. It doesn’t look fresh. It looks like you have left the bed and forgot to make it.

fiskbensparkett

Wooden floors are nice. But the fish-bone patterned parquet floors… no, I do not want to see them again. There are ways to make patterned wooden floors that are nicer. These were everywhere when I grew up. I really think the straight patterns are much nicer.

flaking

Flaking paint… no, no, no… please. Clean it up and repaint it nicely, but don’t leave it like this!

rusty

Rusty metal things for decoration… either naturally rusty or fake rusty, just looking rusty. Never in MY home.

woodwords

Words in wood (or similar) saying things like “Love”, “Home”, “Carpe Diem”, “Welcome”… Really dislike. Looks so cheap.

keepcalmandcarryon poster

Posters with words or sentences on.  Supposedly saying something clever. Some have, I admit, nice typography and layout, but having to look at some clever saying as soon as you get into a home or a room… Tiresome.

pink and black living room

Pink interiors? There are much worse examples than the above one. Wouldn’t be able to be in a pink room like that without wanting to run out again as soon as possible. The shelves and the floor and the vase are OK, but the rest is too…. pink.

pastelinterior

Pastel interiors? At least here the sofa is white and the carpet and part of the walls and curtains too. The room lacks a contrasting, stronger color. Too much pastels. Too baby-ish.

ananasThe gilded pineapple… Why does so many who write about interior design today find this a desirable object to have in ones home? I fail to see its beauty… The pineapple tower in Scotland is quite interesting though…

ginosarfatti

The Gino Sarfatti lamp for Flos. It is everywhere. Big, heavy thing… Expensive too. In a recent issue of the interior design magazine I subscribe to, it was shown about five times, in five different articles, in the same issue of the magazine. It appears just everywhere these days. Either like here in metal color, or in brass color. I don’t think it is beautiful. It is just too much.

There are more items like that. But I’ll stop here for now.

White chests of drawers

When passing IKEA the other day I saw this really nice chest of drawers called NORDLI. (Unable to find it at the US Ikea site).

chedtofddrawers, Nordli, byrå

NORDLI, chest of drawers from Ikea. Photo: ©nini.tjader.2014

There are several models and sizes with different number of drawers of the NORDLI chest of drawers.

I love it. If I had the space for it, there is no doubt about it that I would get one, in a for me appropriate size. I like the flat front without any handles to get stuck in or hurt by, just the small opening instead of a handle. And in the above model I also like how they have combined the drawers to get a non-conform look of them. The price is also reasonable.

IKEA also has HEMNES, which is nice, but I prefer the look of the above NORDLI. A lot more to my taste.

hemnes chest of drawers

HEMNES. Picture from IKEA.

Another Ikea classic is MALM, that comes in various models, sizes, number of drawers and colors or veneers but also in white (I have the three drawers in oak veneer, which isn’t available in the US, and two small ones with two drawers, also in oak veneer).

malm

MALM. Picture from IKEA

Another model of chest of drawers is SNÖ from Asplund that I really love. The price though is more than four times higher for this, as it usually is for designer products.

If I could afford it, SNOW from Asplund would be on my wishlist… but I think NORDLI from Ikea is almost as goodlooking.

There are of course several other white chests of drawers out there. I choose these ones.

Round Things, part II

Thought I’d continue on the theme from yesterday… round things. Because I enjoy round things…

africaneggs

African eggs. Photo: ©nini.tjader.2014

The above are decorated stone eggs from Africa, bought at a shop in Stockholm which I don’t remember the name of. Have had them for years. They are decorated with abstract pictures of animals.

The eggs live on my candle tray in the livingroom.

The above are two wooden balls with carved patterns and two ceramic balls (the blue and white ones).  Presently archived in a bowl in the bedroom. [Used the backside of a plastic tray as background, but I didn’t notice the printed text in the middle there until done… that image need some editing]. The blue and white ceramic balls were bought at MIO long ago.

Details of the two wooden balls below. As far as I remember those are also african. I think they are beautiful.

Illustrations and typography

I love good illustrations and good typography. No matter where it appears. Like in this book for instance…

bible

The damaged cover. Photo: ©nini.tjader.2014

bib_etikett_tysk

It apparently came from this shop.

bib_tryckt_tysk

This one was published in 1908.

In 1963, when I was in Israel for the very first time, I found this old book in a demolished house in southern Israel, close to the the Egyptian border and Gaza. Looked in it and decided that no matter its weight, I would take it home to Sweden. And so I did.

It is not the entire Bible. It is the five books of Moses + the book of Josua. It is in german. At some time it belonged to somebody and was given to him on his bar mitzwah in June 1919. His name was Ernst Pinkus. According to Google there was an Ernst Pinkus born in 1908… If that was the same one, whose book I have, I have no idea, and I have not investigated it either. (And I don’t want anyone claiming the book this long afterwards…).

bib_insida_tysk

The illustrations are beautiful and so is the typography. The covers are very damaged, but the inside of the book is fairly well kept. This book is over a hundred years old so…

Here are some examples of the illustrations and the typography.

bib_5mos_tysk

bib_welt_tysk

bib_sabbath_tysk

Every chapter in the book has these beautiful illustrations and every part in it has really nice beginning capitals. I guess you can call its style “jugend” or art nouveau when it is at its best. Love it and love to look at the pictures and the layout.

Folkloristic weaves

weaves, wall carpet, tunisia

Tunisian Wall Carpet Photo:@nini.tjader.2014

This wall carpet was bought in Matmata in the Tunisian desert in 1979 for my fathers birthday. It is genuine handiwork done in the berber desert caves at Matmata (see below) by the women who live/d there. When my father passed way in 1984, I took care of the wall carpet. It is wool. I always regretted that I didn’t buy at least one more of these… It has kept its colors over the years. It is done on a loom that stands upright on the floor. Similar to the looms used in Turkey for kelim carpets.

Tunisian proof of origin

Tunisian proof of origin

What often strikes me is the similarity of folkloristic weaves from different places around the world. To some extent this is probably because of the similar techniques used when doing the weaves, and the often natural pigments used to dye the yarns. They are always in wool and the weave bottom in cotton.

Greek weaves

Greek weaves, photo: ©nini.tjader.2014

The above weaves are all from Greece and pretty small. Bought in a small village on Crete several years ago. At the time, greek women did those weaves at home. Today they are impossible to find. Copies with those patterns are made by machines and are far from genuine. That’s a pity.

I love those folkloristic weaves, no matter which country they come from.

–––

By the way, Matmata in Tunisia was an interesting village in the desert, dug down into the sand dunes, in cover for the heat and the sandstorms. It is still there, and some of the caves are used as hotels (were already then). I guess much has changed over the years with all the tourists visiting. Much of the genuine atmosphere there has probably been lost over the years and the village has become a town totally dependent on tourism.

There is a YouTube video about it (about 11 minutes long). Soundtrack is pretty bad but… One of the StarWars films was filmed there. There are more videos about Matmata, Tunisia on YouTube if you are interested. Not all in English though. Like this one in French. That one has a short sequence at the end about the carpets and otherwise tells about the life in the caves.

The Office-Chair, Part V

Finally. Made up my mind – after discussing it somewhat with a friend – which chair to buy. And from where. And in which color.

This is the result: A copy Charles Eames DAR Office Chair, in fibre glass, RED (to get som color into my office corner which otherwise is just grey and white). And I ordered it from INFURN last night.

office-chair, charles eames dar

Image is a screenshot from INFURN.COM website.

I like the form of it and it IS comfortable. Sat in its twin last week in town – without wheels there, but to get the feel of how the seat felt.

They’ve now started the production of the chair… Delivery time is long. It will arrive approximately mid July.

Now I’ll just have to wait for it to arrive and hope my old chair won’t fall to pieces before that.

Occasional Beauty

Sometimes I just happen to take notice of objects and buildings and other things around me. Usually when waiting for a commuter train, or walking along a path from point A to point B. We can call it seeing the occasional beauty of objects and buildings around you. Here are some examples.

bikeparking

This is the wall of the bike parking at Älvsjö Station towards the rails and the railway platform which you see when standing there waiting for the trains. The house itself is actually interesting for how you park bicycles inside it.

Tumba Station

Then there is the northern building at Tumba Station. I kind of like the form of the building. It is something with the arc above the rails… Building is presently closed for renovation but… The southern, main station building, is equally imposing but not as beautiful. I don’t have a picture of it at the moment.

brunnslock

And this beauty… It is a lid over one of the many communal water well and pipes in the Stockholm area. This particular one is along the path between Heron City and City Gross in Kungens Kurva. Iron. Beautiful design and typography, very iconic logo of the city… yeah, I’m a nerd. I admit.

Things Inherited, part II

Here are some more of my inherited things.

tinbox for cuff-links

Photo: @nini.tjader.2014

Small box in tin. My father used to keep his cufflinks in it. The single pair he owned, also in tin, is still in there… the letter O, for Oskar, engraved onto them.

cufflinks

Photo: @nini.tjader.2014

When I was a child I was very fascinated by the box as you could see the face of the man looking down if you turned the lid over.

I love this crystal vase with the etched image of a woman with child.

kjellander glass vase

Photo: @nini.tjader.2014

It was done by a known glass designer called Kjellander. His objects are nowadays found in various auctions around the world and are, as I understand it, collectors items.

dalecarlian wooden horses

Here are my two dalecarlian horses in wood. Got them as a child. They too have become collectors items. Still made today, but it is the older ones, like these, that certain people collect. No, I am not selling ;).

Wilhelm Kåge, argenta vase with dragon, Gustavsberg

Photo: @nini.tjader.2014

Another collectors item is this green vase with a dragon, made by Kåge (Wilhelm Kåge, Sweden, 1889–1960) for Gustavsberg in the Argenta series. The dragon is inlaid in silver.

Argenta vase, Wilhelms Kåge, Gustavsberg

Photo: @nini.tjader.2014

A more recent collectors item are the ceramics designed by Lisa Larson (who is very popular in Japan). I have this bulldog. She is still active doing new things. My bulldog is from the series “Stora Zoo” from 1958 where the bulldog was added later and only produced between 1960-1968. I don’t know which year my bulldog was done, or when it entered my childhood home.

Then there is this crystal vase. Small and has some un-readable sign at the bottom. Love it though, Especially when the light shines through it.
