Things Inherited, part I

ceramic containers, butter-dogs

Photo: @nini.tjader.2014

I think we all have things around us at home that we have inherited from our parents or other relatives. Things that have history and age. These are some of mine.

Two formerly very common ceramic containers that I keep in the kitchen. They are older than me. The smaller one to the left I remember that my mother used to keep butter in.

The bigger one – which unfortunately is broken och glued together by a non-professional (me) – I think they used to keep salted cucumbers in or similar stuff. You cannot keep any liquids in it (other use similar containers for flowers), but it is perfect to put the rolls with plastic and foil in.

The two small silver (?) dogs are butter-dogs. Which means they were used to place your butter-knife on so the greasy side of the knife wouldn’t rest on the table cloth.

I’ve seen both the dogs and the two containers all my life. The small “calendar”-thing also comes from home. But that is more recent.

Just beside those stands my grandmothers and grandfathers huge silver soup-spoon. I actually use it now and then. And polish it now and then… Have no idea if it is real silver or not. This is the stamp on it. I know nothing about silver or silver stamps… Total length 35 cms.

On the back of the handle the initials of my grandmother and grandfather are engraved. It says T o T. D. , which stands for Titus & Tekla Dahlstedt, who were my mothers parents. So the soup-spoon might have been their wedding gift.

Front end of the handle looks like this.

Is it worth anything? Have no idea. Have never checked.

On the wall above these things there is this ceramic wall decoration, also from home.

It is danish and comes from somewhere called Søholm. If I remember correctly (?) my father (or was it my mother?) got it for a birthday. Not sure though. I like it and its colors. If I hadn’t I would not have kept it. And certainly not put it on the kitchen wall. 22 cm x 20 cm in size.

When I started looking around in my home for things inherited from my parents, I realized that I have several. Many more than I thought. So stay tuned, there will be a follow up with some other stuff another day.

Candle-love

I love candles. Around the year. Not only during the very dark winter season.

candles

Photo: @nini.tjader.2013

I have this group of candles on a tin tray on my sofa-table in the livingroom. They haven’t changed much over the years, but I sometimes change the candle holders a bit. Usually the candles are white, and without any fragrance.

The chain of candleholders in white, around the tray, come from Ikea. They’ve sold them for years and still do on and off. Now seems to be off though… The blue candleholder was one of Ikeas summer specials the other year, sold temporarily with a candle that smelled like lemons in it. Works perfectly for any other candle too.

The tin tray was bought on sale in a shop that is no more. Love it. On the tin tray are two decorated stone-eggs from Afro Art. The bigger candle is surrounded by tiny shells and stones picked by me in various places around the Mediterranean.

I also have other kinds of candles elsewhere, but not on the sofa-table.

The office-chair, part IV

The hunt for a new office-chair goes on.
Went into town yesterday to test-sit in one of the chairs I had in mind, a Charles Eames chair.
I don’t want to buy a new office chair without knowing if it is comfortable or not.
Found one, but without wheels, at Nordiska Galleriet. It IS comfortable.

Also, got a recommendation from an ex-blogger via Instagram that it is comfortable. Her son has one. Herself she has a Saarinen Tulip chair which, she says, is not all that comfortable. So, I didn’t sit in the one with wheels, but the one without wheels. I need wheels, or it is too low for me to reach my keyboard and to see my screen comfortably. (I’m too short for chairs that cannot be adjusted in height).

No, I will NOT buy an orange chair… 😉

White maybe?

Question is, from where to buy it? In which color? White? Black? Those are the only two colors I consider. In plastic or in glass fiber? Plastic is matt, glass fiber is shiny. Or so I’ve understood it. Price-wise it differs about SEK1000 between one and the other. The glass fiber variant being the more expensive. Is glass fiber the more durable?

I will not buy the original though. Way too expensive. But there are replicas at various online shops. I just hope that quality etc. can be trusted. Can INFURN be trusted? They presently has free delivery.

Charles Eames office chairA black one maybe?

A cushion to sit on is easy to DIY. Or buy one of those available everywhere for dining room chairs.

IKEA has a similar one (not on their site presently), in plastic, various colors, for SEK149… Not quite the quality I want… felt like very weak plastic when I tested it the other day. Price is fantastic though…

I’ll think about it another day or two before making the final decision.

The office-chair, part III

office-chair, comet, lammhults

Photo by Nini Tjäder, at Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2014

As the office-chair I would have liked to buy turned out to be WAY too expensive, I looked around on the internet at various stores for a less expensive alternative.

For a while there I considered buying a fake designer chair… an Eames or HAY chair or similar. But changed my mind and searched some more. I found these:

office-chair, cactus, stalands

Chair called Cactus.

Would have loved a chair in red. But I want armrests. With arm-rests it only comes in black or white. Would be a black then. Seat is lacquered wood. White is not practical. Looks like this:

office-chair, cactus, stalands

Chair called Cactus with armrests.

And then there is this one, called Joy, where the seat is in leather. Comes in black or white.

office-chair, joy, stalands

Chair called Joy.

Remains to go to Stalands and sit in the chairs to feel if they are comfortable. I’ll do that today and hope that they have them on show. Only after test-sitting it, it is decision time.

UPDATE 2014-03-05: well, had no luck. The chair called Cactus, with armrests, has been discontinued, and the shop didn’t have the one without them either. The chair called Joy they had. And it was extremely uncomfortable. Did a new round at IKEA and sat in all their present work-chairs. No. Not happy about them. So, the hunt goes on. Now, again, considering a fake designer-chair… Eames or HAY or…

No, I will not buy that office-chair

comet office chair

After a week I got an answer from the firm that makes this chair (called COMET) about where to buy it and the price.

Price is approximately SEK 8.705 + VAT, in medium range cloth. That is WAY too expensive. At least for me. So I will NOT buy it.

Now will keep on looking what else is available out there that I can afford. With five wheels, adjustable height and armrests.

Happy Birthday Globen

Globen, the Globe, Ericsson Globe

Globen, the Globe, Ericsson Globe ©nini.tjader

The Globe, or Stockholm Globe Arena until 2009, and then Ericsson Globe, had its 25th birthday this week. Or “Globen” which we all call it. It is an interesting building. I’ve always loved its form. And I’ve worked in the building just beside it for years. First at DD Data Distribution AB, which moved into the office buildings as the 2nd tenant in the beginning of November, 25 years ago. The first tenant was Aftonbladet which moved in about the same time as DD, in its own building just beside Globen. DD moved to Medborgarplatsen when it went bankrupt and re-emerged there. I was away from Globen for a couple of years. When I later got employed at Aftonbladet I was back again.

In 2006, long before it became the Ericsson Globe, and before the Skyview was built onto the Globe, I took some series of pictures of the Globe. Most of them were taken at nights – summer nights in June most of them, that is why it is so light – when I worked nights.

Skyview goes on rails upon the Globe all up to the top and provides a breathtaking view of Stockholm – they say. I still haven’t used it. Will though one of these days… The Globe already then on and off got lighted with different colored lights at night, depending on what activity was going on inside it and/or if something else was celebrated, like Xmas or so.

Here are my pictures from 2006. Click on them to see bigger versions.

Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2014

So I spent about three hours a the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2014 yesterday. That is about as long you can be at a fair in my experience. Then you get too tired to see anything more or take anything more in. I didn’t visit Hall C!  Suspected as much after having visited Hall A, Hall B and the Green House. But by then I wouldn’t have been able to see more. What did I miss in Hall C, I wonder? Always a nice experience though. It is SO nice to look at all the beautiful furniture and lights there.

How about trends then? This year, softer profiles, lots of pastels, lots of greys and greys and greys (which I love). And greens (which I do not particularly like unless we are talking about plants). Natural materials. No patterns, structure instead. Playful forms at times. Lots of new and nice lights. This is a personal report from the fair.

Black and white

table mat

When I last was at IKEA I found this table mat. Love it. All black and white. With my black tea-cup on it it looks even more decorative. When my cousin and her husband were here from California in July, she asked if I had a preference for black and white and grey and no colors? It might sometimes look like it, but I DO like colors as well even if a lot of what I surround myself with at my home actually are black, white and grey.

Picture straighten with the Perspective Crop Tool in Adobe Photoshop CC. Love that tool.

(Just got a Happy Anniversary from WordPress.com – because I registered with WP three years ago. Yes, I prefer WordPress to Blogger. But I use both. And tomorrow it is four years ago that I first saw the flat I now live in. Time flies.).

Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair 2013

Befoer I left, I had a rest out in the light area by the entrance. Four hours at the fair made me tired.

Before I left, I had a rest out in the light area by the entrance. Four hours at the fair made me tired.

There are certain fairs I really like and wouldn’t want to miss. One of them is the Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair which returns in February every year. It is huge. It is a professional fair. And only one day is open to people like me, the public. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. The 2013 version I visited on February 9th. All my pictures from then can be found here.

That fair shows off the very best that Scandinavian furniture and light firms can show and is an indication of what is coming the coming year. Trends. Materials. Colors. Three full halls.

If I had the space and the money…

I love it as much every year. I will be there next year too. Meanwhile… all my pictures from the visit can be seen here.

Decorative dog

dachshund, tax

Boppie, my dachshund many years ago

I am a bit surprised that the dachshund has become so popular as an illustration for various interior design objects. Nowadays it appears on the most unbelievable objects. Like trays, pillows, posters, towels, wallpapers…

The poster with glasses and variations with rosettes and other things are very popular. More here.

OK, it IS a nice and goodlooking dog. But as a towel?image1_838a8dca3741ee9dc709fc0498e92d55

Or a tray?

PS. I prefer the real, live dog. It is an intelligent dog.

Butterfly chairs

butterlfy chair, fladdermusfotölj

It is odd with these items that return into fashion. Like the butterfly chair.

I had one when I was a teenager. It was yellow as far as I can remember. With black legs. Like this one.

butterfly chair, fladdermusfotölj

Today you again see them everywhere in interior design magazines. Some claim it is comfortable to sit in… I disagree. What I remember it was really uncomfortable and hard to find any relaxed way to sit in. It was always a problem to find a way how to position your legs.

Today’s models often come in leather or hairy skins. Like the ones below. Makes them look more elegant, maybe. But I doubt they get more comfortable just because they no longer are made in galon. But they are expensive today. They were cheap then when I had one. No, I would NOT want one today. But I am fascinated by the fact that they came back in fashion again.

Messages on the wall

wall stickers

I am not a big fan of placing message sor words on the walls of your home. But there are nice ones. Like the above. This particular one comes from Adzif. (Note: Site is in French). If I should get one it should be words, not messages.  They also have a lot of other wall stickers, both for adults and children. Most of them really nice ones.
