My turkish kelim carpet

The other day somebody spotted my Turkish kelim carpet in the background of one of my Instagram posts.

Turkish kelim

It is an interesting carpet. I bought in Turkey in 2003 after some discussions about the price. It is 305 cms long and 77 cms wide, but rather thin. I managed to squeeze it into my suitcase for the transportation home. It has lots of pictures of animals and flowers on it and some of the patterns are probably symbolic for one thing or another. Not that I know… I also do not know its age.

Pictures of the carpet

Shot some pictures of it from top to bottom (the way you look at it and follow the pattern) the other day. The bottom part of it near to the door to the patio is a bit sun-faded, but the rest is OK. I’ve had it cleaned (by professionals) twice. I love its colors.

I love this carpet and I too enjoy looking at its patterns. It lives in my livingroom and I pass it every day several times when I pass from the livingroom into or out of the bedroom.

Every part of the carpet has a different picture in the middle of it. Five in all.

The 5th part of the carpet is the one faded by the sun. It is not TOO bad though. The bottom righthand corner always rolls up from the floor and I have not been able to fix that. I bought it like that. Presently I stick that corner under the round floor-pillow.

Under the carpet I have this grey security carpet so you won’t fly away with the carpet if you come in a hurry. It prevents it from sliding.

The backside/underside of the carpet is interesting as well and very well made. Handmade, yes.

More on carpets

Even though I love carpets, there are certain now very heavy trends with carpets that I do not like at all.

One is the Beni Ouarain carpets. Long-haired, wool carpets from Marocco. Some decades ago this kind of carets sold really cheap. Not so today as they have become a trend. You see them in a lot of interior design reports, magazines and blogs. People seem to love them dearly… If you do a Google search on images on “Beni Ouarain” you will see more examples of them. Usually they are off-white with a black, simple pattern that can vary from design to design and it usually has fringes. Most look homemade/handmade, not done in a factory, but lately they have started to appear also as factory-made carpets with this kind of pattern and look.

Then there is this pattern (above). Suddenly appears on carpets and other textile objects just everywhere. Am I tired of this pattern? Oh, yes.

Another trend for carpets that has been around for a while is layering. That is, you put carpets on carpets on carpets in layers…

Above a nice kelim carpet on top of a a carpet of another carpet of natural fibers. I do not see the point in the layering… not unless you have very cold floors. Below is another example of this kind of layering.

And this, below, another example which I can actually accept as the carpets are of similar kind and similar color and therefore make up a unity. The danger of tripping is still there though as always with layered carpets.

Then there is the trend I dislike the most: patch-work, where they take patches of carpets and sew them together. I wrote about this here already on November 16th, 2011.

Personally I prefer simple rugs, put on the floor one by one and not layered. And I love kelims, as long as they are not done as patch-work…
