Moni Arkadiou Manastery

Moni Arkadiou Monastery A monastery from the 400th century. Rebuilt during the 1500th century. It has a bloody history.

On November 9th, 1866, there were hundreds of refugees staying in the monastery when the Ottoman army attacked.

Crete - Moni Arkadiou

The cretans rather died than give up so they put the gunroom, which held all the gunpowder, on fire and by doing so killed both most of themselves and the attacking moslems. Many of those who fought to the end later became martyrs which are not forgotten to this day.

Near to the monastery is a bone-room that holds the bones found from those who died in the attack. There are also some statues of some of those who died. One small girl was the only person who survived.
