Regions of Crete

Crete is Europe's and Greece's southernmost island. It is situated in the Mediterranean. Crete is divided into four regions, Hania, Rethymnon, Iraklion and Lassithi.

In the summer 2001 I visited Crete for the 5th time and stayed in Rethymnon for the second time.

It is a beautiful island with its high mountains – knewn from the Greek mythology– its long and sandy beaches both on the north coast and the south coast. It is also fairly green even in summer. The cretans are friendly and hospitable and a proud people. They still remember the German occupation during World War II and have no friendly feelings for germans.

Crete has four main mountainranges, the highest mountain Psiloritis is 2.456 meters high in the Rethymno area. The next highest is Pachneb which is 2.452 meters high in the Chania area.
