On the top of many of the rocks you find monasteries, 24 of them. Some are still active today, some are closed and others are in ruins. Some of them have very few monks and one has been made into a nunnery (which we visited after lunch). Originally the mountains were used by hermits who lived in caves in these mountains. Later they built the monasteries but some still continued to live as hermits. Som lived as a kind of hermits, but together in their monasteries.
